Top Club Matches at
Ascot Park
Sunday October 19th at Ascot Park saw the curtain drawn on arguably the longest grass polo season played by any HPA club this summer. Good spring weather saw a prompt start to summer polo in mid-April with, amazingly, not one day of polo being cancelled due to rain, with dry conditions necessitating frequent rotations between the Club's four grounds. Equally astonishingly, the decision to conclude the fun on the grass was made due to the hardness of the ground rather than the onset of autumnal weather.
At the 'top end' of polo club activities, Epsom
were triumphant for a second year running in May's
Waterloo Cup.
One of Ascot Park's most loyal sponsors and members Keith Cornwell choosing 5th July to stage the
Cornwell Affiliates Cup, shown right.
An exciting four- team knockout followed between the Army, RAF, Royal Navy and Cornwell. Last year's winners the Royal Navy were knocked out by Cornwell with the surprised and delighted RAF team, the lowest rated team at -4, defeating a strong Army team comprised of four O's.
The subsidiary final was won convincingly by the Royal Navy running out a fine score of 6 1/2 goals to the Army's 1 goal. Leaving the final between the RAF and Cornwell. The RAF made a determined start in the first chukka though by the second the combination of Victoria Grace and Joe Byrne came into its own, leaving Tim Brown and his lower handicapped players a lot to deal with! Despite huge defensive efforts by the RAF, Cornwell pressed their advantage with Darius Agharokh and Gordon Wallace attacking strongly. In the latter half, Cornwell drew strongly ahead running out the tournament winners by 5 goals to 2 1/2.
